San Giorgio Maggiore church
Home to Fondazione Cini
San Giorgio Maggiore church stays on the homonym island, in front of Saint Mark's basin and beside Giudecca island.
The facade is a XVI century design by Palladio, to replace a previous Gothic building. From the campanile, reconstructed in 1774 after a collapsing, it is possible to admire a great view on Venice and Saint Mark.
San Giorgio Maggiore hosts congresses and conferences in its convent's cloisters, and it is the site of the prestigious Fondazione Cini, a cultural foundation established in XX century. The same convent of San Giorgio Maggiore had been the refugee of Cosimo de' Medici when he had been banished from Florence.
