Santa Margherita church
A turbolent history
Santa Margherita church was one of the oldest churches in Venice; its dedication to Saint Margaret of Antioch, and the proximity to the church of San Pantalon, both popular saints in Eastern Mediterranean, suggest that this area could have housed a number of Byzantine merchants.
Santa Margherita church was then rebuilt in XVIII, but due to its suppression in 1808, the building was used as a tobacco factory, then as a storehouse and nowadays as a conference hall by Ca' Foscari university.
The campanile, whose upper part was also demolished in 1808 due to safety concerns, is now used as a private house.
The church is located on the beautiful campo Santa Margherita, Dorsoduro neighbourhood.
