Santa Maria Maggiore church

A military ground, a warehouse and even a prison

Santa Maria Maggiore church and convent were built in early SVI century to host nuns from Sant'Agnese convent. Church was dedicated to the Virgin because of a miroulous image.
Santa Maria Maggiore convent was suppressed by Napoleon, and then used as a military area until Austrians (even horses were walking on this ground). Finally demolished in 1900, on the convent's ground was built a prison in 1929, to substitute that at San Marco, still in use.

Santa Maria Maggiore in Venice is still a prison, with the church closed (it was used as a warehouse, and is probably almost empty inside).
