Santa Maria Mater Domini church

Previously dedicated to Santa Christina

Santa Maria Mater Domini church of Venice dates back to XVI century, designed probably by Sansovino and Codussi.
This was a religious site since X century, cause a church already existed here, dedicated to Saint Christina. The saint is indeed portrayed on a painting by Catena, a minor painter who was friend with Giorgione and Bellini.
In 1488 the porch of the church was sealed with boards in order to prevent the homosexual relationships that happened here in night time - we are not far from the famous Carampane neighbourhood, the ancient red light district of Venice.

Santa Maria Mater Domini is located in Santa Croce district; however, its facade is not facing the homonym square.
