The dance field is set up as self-employed sector of the Venice Biennale in 1998. The shows presented at the Biennale between 1999 and 2002 are divided into thematic sections that take place from May to October during the season danzamusicateatro (organically as they are called the three areas of live performance of the Biennale). The Theatre Festival of the Biennale began in 1934. The idea that started the festival, was to represent the classic venetian in the natural scenery of Venice. Among the first performances of Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice.
