Zitelle church

Spinsters' church

Zitelle church was built in the late XVI century on Giudecca island, and was part of a complex which had the purpose of housing poor young single women whose families could not affort their dowry.
Destined to remain zitelle (spinsters) forever, the girls were taught embroidery and music in order to support themselves and no to be involved in prostitution.
Zitelle church (officially Santa Maria della Presentazione) faces the Giudecca Canal; its facade is Palladian-style, but a definitive attribution to Palladio is disputed.
