Scuola Grande di San Rocco

The brotherhood of Saint Roch

Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice was founded in 1478 just beside the homonym church. The worship of San Rocco (Saint Roch) became very important in Venice after a terrible epidemic of plague, being this saint the protector and patron of sick people (especially for plague). The devotion increased since 1485 when a relic from the saint's body was acquired by the church.
Scuola Grande di San Rocco is the most famous and visited of the Venetian scuole, thanks to masterpieces such as the paintings by Tintoretto.

Scuola Grande di San Rocco stays on the homonym square, not far from Frari. Water bus stop: San Tomà.
