Marciana Library

An ancient temple for classical culture

Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, or Marciana Library in English, was created in 1468 thanks to a donation of books by Cardinal Bessarion from Byzantium, although the first project for a public library in Venice dated back to XIV century, during the stay of poet Francesco Petrarca in the lagoon.
Its patrimony is particularly important for what it concerns classical culture and Venetian history.
Marciana Library is still in function as a public library (one of the most important libraries in Europe), however it is possible to visit some of its rooms, with the ticket of the museums of Saint Mark's square (which includes entrance to Doge's Palace and Correr museum).

Marciana Library is located on Saint Mark's square, right in front of the Doge's Palace. For visits, entrance is the same as for Correr museum.
